How Often Should You Flush a Water Heater?

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated March 16, 2026 · 5 min read

In NJ's hard water, once a year isn't optional—it's the difference between a heater that lasts 8 years and one that lasts 12.

Flushing removes the sediment that builds up on a tank's floor. How often you should do it depends on your water—and in New Jersey, our water makes a clear case for staying on schedule.

The simple answer

Flush a tank water heater at least once a year. In hard-water parts of NJ, or if you've never flushed an older unit, twice a year for the first year isn't excessive.

Why NJ needs it more

New Jersey's moderately hard water deposits minerals faster than soft-water regions. That sediment hardens, insulates the burner, wastes energy, and overheats the tank floor. Annual flushing is the cheapest way to fight all of that.

Skipping flushes is the most common reason we see tanks fail years early. It's a small task with an outsized payoff.

Signs you're overdue

  • Popping or rumbling noises
  • Hot water that runs out faster than it used to
  • Rising energy bills with no other explanation
  • Cloudy or sediment-flecked hot water

Should you DIY or call a pro?

A flush sounds simple, but on an older tank it can disturb sediment and clog the drain valve, or reveal that the valve no longer seals. If your unit is several years old and never flushed, let a pro do the first one. Book a flush with us and we'll handle it cleanly.

Tankless owners

Tankless units aren't flushed the same way—they're descaled to remove scale from the heat exchanger, also once a year in hard water. We handle both. Call 973-834-8833.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if you never flush a water heater?

Sediment hardens, the burner overheats the tank floor, efficiency drops, and the tank fails years early. It's the most common cause of premature failure we see.

Can flushing damage an old water heater?

On a neglected old tank, a flush can occasionally reveal a failing drain valve or stir loose sediment. That's why the first flush on an old unit is best done by a pro.
