Why Is My Hot Water Pressure Low?

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated April 27, 2026 · 5 min read

If only the hot water trickles while cold runs strong, the problem is on the hot side—often the heater. Here's what's going on.

Low water pressure is annoying. But when only the hot water is weak and the cold runs fine, you've already narrowed the problem to the hot side of the system—often the water heater itself.

First, isolate it

  1. Compare hot and cold pressure at the same faucet
  2. If both are weak, it's a whole-house issue, not the heater
  3. If only hot is weak, the cause is the heater or hot-water lines

Common hot-side causes

  • Sediment buildup clogging the tank outlet or lines
  • Mineral scale narrowing pipes and fittings (common in NJ)
  • A failing or clogged dip tube shedding debris
  • A partially closed valve on the hot outlet
  • Scale in a tankless heat exchanger restricting flow

The sediment and scale connection

NJ's hard water is the usual villain. Sediment from the tank and mineral scale in the lines gradually restrict flow on the hot side. Flushing the tank—or descaling a tankless unit—often restores pressure noticeably.

A sudden drop in hot pressure after a repair or new install can mean debris dislodged into an aerator—an easy fix to check first.

Quick checks before you call

  1. Clean the faucet aerators (unscrew and rinse out debris)
  2. Confirm the hot-outlet valve on the heater is fully open
  3. Check whether it affects one fixture or the whole house

When to call us

If cleaning aerators and flushing doesn't restore flow, the dip tube, internal scaling, or a line restriction may need professional attention. We'll diagnose and fix it—book a repair or maintenance flush. Call 973-834-8833.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is only my hot water pressure low?

Because the restriction is on the hot side—commonly sediment, scale, a failing dip tube, or a partly closed hot-outlet valve. Cold water bypasses all of that.

Can flushing improve hot water pressure?

Often yes. Removing sediment and scale that restrict the tank outlet and lines can noticeably restore hot-side flow.
