Tankless Descaling: The Maintenance You Can't Skip

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated June 15, 2026 · 6 min read

Tankless units are low-maintenance—but the one task you can't skip in NJ is annual descaling. Here's why.

Tankless water heaters are wonderfully low-maintenance compared to tanks—no big tank to flush, no sediment on a floor. But they have one non-negotiable annual task in hard-water New Jersey: descaling.

Why scale is the tankless enemy

A tankless unit heats water by passing it through a compact heat exchanger. NJ's hard water leaves mineral scale on the inside of that exchanger. Even a thin layer of scale insulates the metal, forcing the unit to work harder, lowering efficiency, and eventually triggering error codes or damage.

What scale buildup causes

  • Reduced efficiency and higher bills
  • Error codes (overheat, flow, ignition)
  • Reduced hot-water flow
  • Premature heat-exchanger wear and shorter lifespan
  • Voided warranty if maintenance is neglected

How descaling works

A technician circulates a descaling solution through the unit to dissolve the mineral buildup, then flushes it clean. It restores efficiency and flow and resets the unit to like-new performance. We do this as part of tankless service.

Many tankless 'failures' we're called to are really just heavy scale. Annual descaling prevents the majority of tankless service calls in NJ.

How often

At least once a year in New Jersey's hard water. Homes with very hard water or heavy usage may benefit from twice-yearly service. A whole-home softener can extend the interval.

Protect your investment

A tankless unit is a bigger upfront investment than a tank—annual descaling is how you protect it and get the full 18–20 year lifespan. Set up annual service with us. Call 973-834-8833.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a tankless water heater be descaled?

At least once a year in NJ's hard water. Heavy use or very hard water may call for twice yearly. A water softener can lengthen the interval.

What happens if you don't descale a tankless heater?

Scale insulates the heat exchanger, cutting efficiency and flow, triggering error codes, and shortening the unit's life. It can also void the warranty.
