What Your Water Heater's Noises Are Telling You

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated May 25, 2026 · 6 min read

A water heater speaks in sounds. Learn to translate the popping, humming, ticking, and screeching into what's actually going on.

A water heater that suddenly gets noisy is trying to communicate. Different sounds point to different issues—some harmless, some worth acting on. Here's how to translate what yours is saying.

Popping or rumbling

The classic sound of sediment. Water trapped under hardened mineral buildup on the tank floor boils and pops through. It wastes energy and shortens tank life. The fix is flushing. (More in our popping sounds guide.)

Ticking or tapping

Often harmless—usually the heat traps or pipes expanding and contracting as water temperature changes. If it's mild and intermittent, it's typically nothing to worry about.

Screeching or whistling

Usually a valve issue—water forced through a partially closed valve or a restricted inlet. Check that valves are fully open; if it persists, a valve may need attention.

Humming

On electric units, a heating element can vibrate and hum as water flows past it. Often harmless, but a loose element can be tightened or secured by a technician.

Banging or hammering

Loud banging can be heavy sediment—or 'water hammer' from pipes when valves close quickly. Heavy sediment banging means the buildup is significant and overdue for a flush.

The sounds to act on fastest are popping/rumbling and loud banging—both point to sediment that's actively shortening your tank's life.

When to call a pro

  • Loud or worsening popping/banging (sediment)
  • Screeching that doesn't stop after checking valves
  • Any new noise paired with reduced performance or leaks

We'll quiet it down

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my water heater humming?

On electric units, a heating element vibrating as water flows past it commonly causes a hum. It's often harmless, but a technician can secure a loose element.

Which water heater noises are serious?

Popping, rumbling, and loud banging usually mean sediment that's shortening tank life and should be flushed. Persistent screeching can mean a valve issue worth checking.
