When Should You Replace Your Water Heater?
There's a sweet spot for replacing a water heater—after you've gotten full value but before it fails on its own terms. Here's how to find it.

Pick a water heater that's too small and you'll fight over hot water every morning. Too big and you'll pay to keep extra water hot you never use. Right-sizing is about matching the unit to how your household actually uses hot water.
The number that really matters for tanks is the First Hour Rating (FHR)—how much hot water the unit can deliver in a busy first hour, combining stored water plus what it reheats. A 50-gallon tank with a high FHR can out-deliver a poorly designed 60-gallon unit. We size on FHR, not just capacity.
Count your 'peak hour.' If three people shower between 7 and 8 a.m. while the dishwasher runs, that peak demand—not your total daily use—decides the size you need.
Tankless units are sized by flow rate (gallons per minute) and temperature rise, not gallons. In NJ, cold winter inlet water means a unit must heat more, so we size for the coldest months. A correctly sized tankless system never runs out, no matter how long the shower.
Guessing the size is how people end up with cold showers or wasted money. We'll size your unit based on your real usage and NJ's water temperatures. Call 973-834-8833 for a free sizing consultation.
For most NJ families of three or four, 50 gallons is the safer choice. Couples and small households are often fine with 40.
It depends on how many fixtures you run at once and winter inlet temperature. We size tankless by peak flow rate for NJ's cold months so you never run short.
