Water Heater Emergency: What to Do First

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated February 9, 2026 · 5 min read

A failing water heater can flood a basement fast. Knowing these five steps before it happens can save you thousands in damage.

A water heater that bursts or leaks badly can dump dozens of gallons and keep flowing until someone stops it. In an emergency, a few quick actions limit the damage and keep everyone safe. Know these before you ever need them.

1. Shut off the water

Close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the heater. If you can't reach or turn it, shut off your home's main water valve. This stops fresh water from feeding the leak.

2. Turn off the power or gas

  • Electric: switch off the water heater's breaker in your panel
  • Gas: turn the control knob to 'Off' (and close the gas shutoff if needed)

3. Contain and protect

Move valuables away from the water, lay down towels, and if safe, direct water toward a floor drain. The faster you contain it, the less damage to floors and belongings.

Smell gas or see scorching? Leave the home and call your gas utility from outside first. Safety before property, always.

4. Drain it if needed

If the tank is still leaking heavily, attaching a hose to the drain valve and directing it to a drain can relieve the pressure of a full tank. Only do this if it's safe and accessible.

5. Call for emergency service

Once it's safe and contained, call for emergency water heater service. A burst tank usually means same-day replacement; a major leak may be repairable. We serve Northern NJ and aim to get you handled fast. Call 973-834-8833.

Prevent the next one

Most emergencies follow weeks of ignored warning signs—rust, noise, small drips. A heater past 10 years deserves attention before it fails. We're here for both the emergency and the planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my water heater bursts?

Shut off the cold-water inlet (or your home's main), turn off the power or gas, contain the water, and call for emergency service. Leave and call the gas utility first if you smell gas.

Where is the shutoff valve on a water heater?

It's the valve on the cold-water line entering the top of the tank. Knowing its location before an emergency lets you stop a leak fast.
