Dip Tube Failure: A Hidden Cause of Lukewarm Water
When hot water turns lukewarm and runs out fast, a cracked dip tube is an overlooked culprit. Here's how it works.
Read more →Most 'electric water heater not heating' calls come down to one part: a burned-out heating element. Here's the rundown.
When an electric water heater stops delivering—or only delivers lukewarm water—the culprit is usually a heating element. Most electric tanks have two, and how they fail produces telltale symptoms.
An electric tank has an upper and a lower heating element, each controlled by its own thermostat. The lower element does most of the work; the upper handles the top of the tank and quick recovery. Either can burn out over time, especially with sediment buildup.
Sediment is the hidden killer of lower elements. Annual flushing protects them—another reason maintenance pays off.
A technician tests each element and thermostat with a meter to pinpoint the failure, then replaces the bad element. It's a common, affordable repair—far cheaper than a new unit on a heater that's otherwise sound. Learn more on our heating element page.
On a unit under about 8 years, replacing an element is well worth it. On an older tank with other issues, it may be time to consider replacement. We'll give you a straight answer. Call 973-834-8833.
Usually a failed lower heating element or thermostat. The upper element heats the top of the tank, so you get some warmth but it runs out fast.
On a relatively young tank, yes—it's an affordable repair. On an old unit with other problems, replacement may make more sense.
