How Old Is Your Water Heater? Here's How to Tell

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated June 15, 2026 · 5 min read

Your water heater's serial number hides its birthday. Here's how to decode it—and why the age changes every repair decision.

Knowing your water heater's age is the first step in almost every repair-or-replace decision. If you didn't install it yourself, you can still find out—the answer is hiding in the serial number on the unit's label.

Find the rating label

Look for a sticker on the side of the tank with the model and serial number. The serial number encodes the manufacture date, though the format varies by brand.

Decode the serial number

  • Many brands encode the year and month/week in the first few characters
  • Some use a letter for the month and digits for the year
  • Rheem, Bradford White, A.O. Smith and others each use their own scheme
  • When in doubt, the brand's website or a quick call to us can decode it

A couple of common patterns

Bradford White often uses a letter-pair date code. A.O. Smith and Rheem frequently start the serial with the year and week. If the format isn't obvious, send us a photo of the label and we'll decode it for you.

No label or unreadable serial? If you don't know the age and the unit looks dated, assume it's older—and have it inspected before it surprises you.

Why age changes everything

  • Under 6 years: most repairs are clearly worth it
  • 8–12 years: every repair is a judgment call
  • Over 12 years: living on borrowed time—plan replacement

What to do with the answer

If your unit turns out to be past 10 years, start planning a replacement before it fails. If it's young, a repair is usually the right call. (See our repair or replace guide.)

We'll decode it and advise

Not sure how old yours is or what to do about it? Send us the label or give us a call—we'll decode the age and give you honest advice. Call 973-834-8833.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out how old my water heater is?

Check the serial number on the rating label. Most brands encode the manufacture date in it, though formats vary. We can decode it from a photo of the label.

What if I can't read the serial number?

If the label is missing or unreadable and the unit looks dated, treat it as older and have it inspected before it fails unexpectedly.
