What Causes Rusty Hot Water?

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated February 23, 2026 · 6 min read

If only the hot water is discolored, the problem is almost certainly inside your tank. Here's what's happening and what to do.

Turn on the tap and get rust-colored water? Where the discoloration shows up tells you almost everything about the cause.

The quick diagnostic test

  1. Run only the COLD water for a minute. Is it clear or rusty?
  2. Then run only the HOT water. Is it clear or rusty?
  3. Compare the two results below

What the results mean

  • Only HOT is rusty → the problem is your water heater (corroding tank or spent anode rod)
  • Both HOT and COLD are rusty → the issue is your home's pipes or the municipal supply, not the heater
  • Rust clears after a few seconds → likely minor sediment, often resolved by flushing

Inside the tank

Every tank has a sacrificial anode rod that corrodes in place of the steel tank. When the rod is used up, the tank itself starts to rust—and that rust tints your hot water. Sometimes replacing the anode rod and flushing the tank buys real time; on an older unit, rusty hot water is an early warning that the tank is failing.

Rusty hot water on a heater over 10 years old usually means a leak is coming. Plan your replacement now, on your terms.

Can it be fixed?

If the unit is relatively young, a flush and anode-rod replacement may clear it up and add years. If it's old or the rust is heavy, the glass lining has likely failed and replacement is the right call.

Is rusty water dangerous?

Small amounts of rust aren't a health hazard, but they stain laundry and fixtures and signal an aging tank. It's a problem worth solving before it becomes a leak. Call 973-834-8833 and we'll diagnose it.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is only my hot water rusty?

Because the rust is forming inside the water heater tank—the anode rod is spent and the steel is corroding. Cold water bypasses the tank, so it stays clear.

Will flushing fix rusty hot water?

Sometimes, if it's caught early and paired with a new anode rod. On an older tank, rusty water usually means the tank itself is failing.
