No Hot Water? Here's What to Check

By the Hot Water NJ Team · Updated June 1, 2026 · 7 min read

No hot water is one of the few home emergencies you can partly diagnose yourself. Here's a safe, step-by-step guide.

Losing hot water is disruptive—and sometimes the cause is simple enough to spot yourself. Work through these safe checks first. If they don't solve it, you'll at least be able to tell us what's happening.

If you have a GAS water heater

  1. Check that other gas appliances work—if not, the issue is your gas supply, not the heater.
  2. Look at the pilot/status light. Is the pilot lit? Many units have a sight glass.
  3. If the pilot is out, follow the relighting instructions on the unit's label—carefully.
  4. If it won't stay lit, the thermocouple is the likely culprit and needs a pro.
  5. Confirm the gas valve to the heater is fully open.

If you have an ELECTRIC water heater

  1. Check the breaker—electric heaters often trip after a surge.
  2. Reset the high-temperature cutoff (red button) behind the upper access panel, if present.
  3. If it trips again immediately, stop—you likely have a failed element or thermostat.
  4. Listen: a faint hum during a call for heat is normal; silence may mean a dead element.

Smell gas at any point? Stop, leave the home, and call your gas utility from outside. Don't troubleshoot a gas smell.

Common causes by symptom

  • No hot water at all → pilot out, tripped breaker, failed gas valve, or dead element
  • Lukewarm water → one failed element (electric), thermostat, or heavy sediment
  • Hot water runs out fast → sediment, failed dip tube, or undersized unit

When to call a pro

If the pilot won't stay lit, the breaker keeps tripping, or you can't find the cause, it's time for a professional repair. And if you simply can't go without—small kids, a business, the dead of winter—we offer emergency service. Call 973-834-8833.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?

Common causes are a pilot light that went out, a tripped breaker, a failed heating element or thermostat, or a tripped high-limit cutoff. Work through the checks above to narrow it down.

My electric water heater breaker keeps tripping—why?

Usually a failed heating element or a wiring/thermostat fault. Don't keep resetting it—have it diagnosed, as repeated tripping can indicate a real hazard.
